Dr Squatch Review

Dr. Squatch is a brand of personal care products developed specifically for men utilizing natural ingredients. While now based in Los Angeles, the company was founded in San Diego in 2013. Dr. Squatch’s products are designed to be skin-friendly, free of chemicals and harmful ingredients, as well as non-animal tested.

Since I often receive free samples as a beauty writer, I decided to purchase the Dr. Squatch Cool Fresh Aloe Men’s Natural Soap because I was intrigued by the brand’s (mostly) humorous ad campaign, which promises “real soap for real men.” I selected this product after taking a short quiz on the brand’s website, which matches your individual preferences to various products. In addition to putting in my ideal getaway, drink of choice, and what I would do if I ever came across the brand’s mascot Squatch (take a selfie, of course! ), I put in my scent preferences, exfoliation level, and the type of soap I already used, which provided the brand with what it needed to provide me with personalized recommendations.

Ingredients: natural cleansing and soothing agents

As I was interested in learning more about the key ingredients in this soap, I reached out to Dr. Rachel Maiman, a dermatologist at Marmur Medical. As a result, she gave insight on the aloe vera, clay, and sea salt in Dr. Squatch’s Cool Fresh Aloe, and, in short, it works.

Aloe Vera: “There are limited scientific studies and evidence on the role of aloe vera in skincare, but most experts agree that its use has definite advantages,” Maiman says. “Sugars within the plant help to retain moisture in the skin. It is also a natural antiseptic, which prevents infection and minimizes the accumulation of microorganisms on the skin. Moreover, it is rich in antioxidants C and E, which also help to reduce inflammation. Additionally, antioxidants in aloe aloe vera make it helpful in treating minor wounds and skin injuries (including sunburns), as well as a natural source of salicylic acid, an anti-inflammatory and keratolytic agent that is extremely helpful in the treatment of acne..”

Kaolin Clay: This is a natural earth clay. Its main function in skincare products, such as cleansers, is to absorb oil (sebum). As a consequence, it can help reduce the likelihood pores become clogged with sebum, which is a factor that can lead to both comedonal and inflammatory acne. It can also help reduce pore size, which is determined in part by how oily the skin is. It is therefore particularly well-suited to those with oily or breakout-prone skin who want to control acne and reduce shine.”

Sea Salt: It is important to note that sea salt has limited evidence to support its benefits,” Maiman points out. Since sea salt absorbs excess oils, much like kaolin clay, it has been theorized to be helpful in preventing and treating acne, given that sebum is an acne precursor. Sea salt is also a mechanical exfoliant for rough, extra dry skin, however it is too harsh to use on the face and should be reserved for use on the body only. It’s also vital to choose an over-the-counter product that contains hydrating ingredients, as opposed to making your own.

Bottom Line

Dr. Squatch’s Cool Fresh Aloe Men’s Natural Soap is great for individuals who prefer to use an actual bar of soap (rather than a body wash) and wish to avoid the chemicals and strong fragrances of mainstream products. Its range of scents and exfoliating properties, along with its commitment to (mainly) natural ingredients, make it a standout product. Though this bar soap is not luxury, it does elevate your shower experience and should be considered to upgrade your bathing routine.
